3rd Kup – Red Tag

Red Tag marks the final stage before Red Belt. Students must demonstrate control, accuracy and confidence in all techniques. Strong sparring awareness, powerful breaking, and full understanding of the theory are expected at this level.

Belt Meaning

Red: Signifies danger — cautioning the student to exercise control and warning opponents to stay away.

Grading Requirements

  • Pattern: Toi-Gye – 37 movements
  • Sparring:
    • One-Step Sparring (Ilbo Matsogi)
    • Free Sparring (Jayu Matsogi)
  • Breaking Techniques (if aged 18+):
    • Reverse Turning Kick – Left and Right (Bandae Dollyo Chagi)
    • Students must name the technique and state the attacking tool
  • If under 18: demonstrate correct distance, name technique, and identify attacking tool
  • Theory Questions
  • Minimum Time Since Last Grading: 4 months

Pattern – Toi-Gye (37 movements)

Toi-Gye: Toi-Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16th century), an authority on Neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his birthplace on the 37th degree latitude, and the diagram represents “scholar.”
