2nd Kup – Red Belt

Red Belt symbolises danger – a warning to opponents and a reminder for students to exercise control. At this level, students are expected to show confident application of fundamental techniques and understanding of advanced blocking combinations and transitions.

Belt Meaning

Red: Signifies danger — cautioning the student to exercise control and warning opponents to stay away.

Grading Requirements

  • Pattern: Hwa-Rang – 29 movements
  • Sparring:
    • One-Step Sparring (Ilbo Matsogi)
    • Two-vs-One Sparring (Iboo Dae Hana Matsogi)
    • Free Sparring (Jayu Matsogi)
  • Breaking Techniques (if aged 18+):
    • Side Kick – Left and Right (Yop Chagi)
    • Turning Kick – Left and Right (Dollyo Chagi)
    • Reverse Turning Kick – Left and Right (Bandae Dollyo Chagi)
    • Students must name the technique and state the attacking tool
  • If under 18: demonstrate correct distance, name technique, and identify attacking tool
  • Theory Questions
  • Minimum Time Since Last Grading: 5 months

Pattern – Hwa-Rang (29 movements)

Hwa-Rang: Named after the Hwa-Rang youth group of the Silla dynasty, an elite band of warriors who played a major role in unifying the three kingdoms of Korea. Movements 11–12 include a Dangimyo Pulgi (release from a wrist grab), followed by a side kick and downward strike. The diagram represents a scholar.
